Website Designing and Colors

How important are colors on a website? Well, website design and choosing colors can make or break a web business. Unfortunately there are web designers who do not give much importance to choosing colors. One should know a little bit of the effects of colors on the human eye.

Even though there are millions of colors and shades, the web browsers can see only up to 256 colors. The color pallets are not often shared by the different browsers and so it is advised to restrict one self to only the 216 colors that are shared by all the web browsers. Using more colors may even distort images and make it very difficult to read the web page text on different browsers.

Bright colors tire the human eyes easily. But at the same time they are the first to attract our attention. So even though we can use bright colors like red and yellow to attract attention towards an advertisement or some other area of interest, we should make sure that the major part of the site does not have bright colors. Too much bright colors will make your visitor to move away from the web page/site consciously or unconsciously as it will tire the eyes. Like all the muscles of the body the eye also has muscles that get tired. Yellow color is one of the brightest of colors and must be used sparingly.

Here are a few things to be considered while choosing colors,

  • There must always be strong contrast between the text and background
  • Web page must have a primary color
  • Secondary color of the page must be close to the first color
  • Highlight colors can be used to draw attention with colors that will contrast with the primary and secondary colors.
  • Contrast of warm and cold colors/ or contrast of values like black and white is to be preferred.
  • Never work against the natural value of colors during combination of colors. For example, combining dark yellow with lighter blue is sure to have a bad effect.
  • Readability of text requires easy recognition.
  • Avoid combinations like green text on red and red text on green background.
