BPO (business process outsourcing) is today a major thrust area in the economies of certain Asian countries. Globalization and rapid developments in internet technology has employed a large number of educated and English speaking graduates in India who work for the clients located in rich western countries. Medical Data entry jobs like medical transcription medical coding/medical billing make up a good percentage of the Indian BPO sector scene.
One of the biggest attractions for clients in the west definitely is the cheaper labor available in countries like India, Korea, and the Philippines in comparison to that in the developed countries. A large number of science and paramedical graduates, who earlier used to try their luck in various fields like marketing or commerce, or teaching, are now finding that entering the BPO medical profession is a better option.
India has a vast pool of English educated people. Besides good English language some of the basic skills required for medical data entry can be learned. An year of probation with training in the following skill areas are usually given.
- Accuracy in data entry
- Ability to organize medical charts, files and diagnostic tests
- Knowledge of medical coding/billing using CPT codes
- Knowledge of Excel and Access
- Familiarization with medical terminologies/nomenclature
Medical data entry involves data to be entered into the patient’s records along with the procedure codes and diagnostic codes. Other skills required besides the clerical skills like copying, filing, and shredding are, creating and editing HCFA 1500 Forms that have to be sent to various insurance companies for the medical claims process.
Most of India’s medical data entry clients are from the US, Canada, Australia and the UK. The Philippines, another large Asian country with English speaking population is fast catching up with India in the outsourcing business.
