Remote data entry is also refereed to as RDE. It involves collection of data in electronic format in a computerized environment. It was mostly used in the hospital or life science sectors and used mainly to collect patient data from volunteers who were participating in a clinical research.
A typical RDE system has the three basic components:
- A graphical interface (GUI) for data entry
- Data quality checker
- Data analysis and reporting component
RDE software has evolved into a more sophisticated system known as EDC or electronic data capture. The main purpose of RDE was to prevent errors in clinical research data when a new drug or medical equipment is tested. Earlier research used to rely on paper forms which were collected and sent to the sponsors of the research. This was a delayed procedure which lacked accuracy. Hence RDE evolved which allowed physicians to enter data remotely and data was available faster with less errors. Laptops have to be generally used during RDE.
Present day remote data entry is based on the internet and is a highly efficient procedure, that uses the web based software EDC which is highly reliable and efficient. EDC is further evolving and converging with other software solutions like CDMS (clinical data management systems) to reach standards that are defined by institutions like HL7 (health level seven) accredited by ANSI (American National Standards Institute).
Thus classical RDE in the health industry is soon paving the way after integration with other highly evolved systems that now makes available data entry in real time and even uses this information to intelligently assist a physician in immediate clinical decision making.
