Clinical Data Entry (CDE)

The clinical data entry (CDE) technology is fast evolving. It is said that the nurses in the health sector spend almost a quarter of their working time for entering clinical data manually or otherwise and for related documentation work. Clinical data entry technologies are bound to change this as it will be beneficial to the health sector in the following ways,
  • Reduced documentation time
  • Will increase standardization of medical dictation
  • Reduced errors
The biggest challenge for CDEs had been the fact that the one had to use the patient data directly for decision support systems, for assessment of quality, and this required well structured data entry. Today we have CDEs that combine free text and structured data entry in one single application and allows clinicians to smoothly switch between these two different types of data input. It is predicted that over the years clinical data entry will be commonplace and the patients' records will become living documents that can be quickly and directly used by clinicians to manage health care in a more continuous manner without waste of time in between.

The CDE will be a great boon to the health sector of the future as it will increasingly integrate together,
  • Decision support systems
  • Quality assessment systems
  • Direct access to online biomedical literature
  • Patient record
