Last Sunday's (September 9th, 2007) Democratic presidential debate at the University of Miami included democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and the Mexican Governor Richardson. It has created hot news about Latinos in the US and will definitely trigger more discussions about making Spanish a second official language in the country. Univision, the Spanish language television in the US had sponsored the forum and the debate was believed to be instantly translated from English to Spanish and also made available online from 7pm on Sunday. The debate turned out to be more interesting when Richardson the only Spanish speaking Latino candidate who was not supposed to directly speak in Spanish according to the debate rules began to do so. Ironically one of the first questions of the debate was whether the candidates were willing to promote Spanish as a second national language of the United States.

Richardson cut off the moderators and started speaking directly in Spanish. Later, after the debate he answered many questions from Spanish press interviewers in Spanish. He also opined that it was unfortunate that the 42 million Latinos in the US could not hear one of their own kinds speak in Spanish at the debate and that Univision was hypocritical and promoting only English.

Many observers have agreed that for a candidate like Richardson who has to obviously connect with his Hispanic voters, it was difficult to enforce the only English rule and what he did is understandable especially at a time when Latinos are preferring a Democrat candidate for president in 2008 by a margin of 42 percentage points.
