The Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) is an Act of Congress which has greatly reformed United States immigration law. It is also known as the Simpson-Mazzoli Act and was signed by President Ronald Reagan on November 6, 1986. The Act made it illegal to knowingly hire or recruit undocumented workers (immigrants who do not possess lawful work authorization). It also requires employers to attest to the immigration status of their employees.
Amnesty was granted to all the undocumented workers who entered the United States before January 1,1982 and were residing here continuously.
Critics argue that the act of granting amnesty has actually caused the multiplication of illegal immigration into the USA and today there are more than 12 million illegal immigrants inside the US.
