Legal Objective Coding

Time is very important for lawyers and with tons of data it is very important to get to the required document as quickly as possible. Legal coding is the process of summarizing or making of a keyword data from a document. Used in the legal profession it is very useful during any litigation to create a fast-search index or database of documents.

Basically there are two types of legal coding, objective and subjective. During objective coding an index of all the documents/ data is made based upon different bibliographic objectives like,
  • Title
  • Source
  • Author
  • Date of the doc
  • Recipient
  • Document format
  • Box number
Lawyers and attorneys spend time preparing for litigation and this involves collection of different documents relevant to the case. Thus they have to search and retrieve documents from database. In the earlier days a brief of the documents used to be prepared via dictation by the paralegal staff or secretary using a word processor application.

Subjective coding is the indexing of documents around subjective data. Objective coding options available today involves indexing based on
  • Inventory of hot files
  • Detailed indexing
