Image Processing Operations and Applications

Image processing involves application of signal processing techniques to an image or video input. The image is treated as a two dimensional signal and the output can be either an image or certain features of the image. Typically image processing services will involve some of the following operations.

  • Image brightness/contrast adjustment
  • Color correction
  • Alignment of images
  • Color conversion
  • Enlarging/reducing/rotation of images
  • Blending of images
  • Image segmentation
  • Image recovery from a RAW format
  • Image edition
  • Retouching work on image
  • Image restoration (remove blur scratch, fading etc)

Image processing that comes under the name of medical imaging refers to the process of taking images of the human body for clinical purposes. Other areas of application of image processing are, photography, printing, machine vision, satellite image processing, face/feature detection, and microscope image processing. The field of manufacturing and industry uses the application of computer vision called machine vision. This technology is best used in the areas of inspection of manufactured automobiles, food semiconductor chips, and pharmaceuticals.

Microscope image processing is used in many fields including in medicine, cancer research, drug testing, metallurgy, biological research and more. It uses both 2D and 3D imaging techniques. Image processing is also used in the study of the properties of substances both organic and inorganic while fluorescence microscopy is used for study of living things. Other application areas include forensic science, car barrier detection and more.
