Data Conversion Basics

While data is converted there are certain basic facts about computing and data that a user must always remember and keep in mind.

  • The foremost point is that it is very easy to delete or throw away information but to increase or add information takes effort and is difficult. During conversion and computing, some information is always lost.
  • Next point to remember is that only by human judgments can we add information.
  • The last and most important thing to remember which is often overlooked and misunderstood is that by just converting a data or image file into a better feature rich format alone it does not become better. As we do not add any information to the data by just changing its file format it will remain as it was until some more information is added by some human effort. The format conversion only makes it more capable of possessing information.

Data conversion can be done by lossy compression or by lossless compression method. In the lossy method data is compressed and then decompressed before retrieval and there is a loss of information. It is usually almost negligible and so is used to compress audio files, still images and video files. During lossless compression, as the name suggests, there is no loss of any information and is useful in banking and conversion of any text data files.
