Assessing Data Quality

How can we assess the quality of data? Well, that will depend upon how the quality parameter is set for a set of data, and also other factors like company objectives, project plan components, intended purpose of data and more. Based on this the variety, quality and quantity of data is checked and evaluated.

Data evaluation is done statistically, economically and scientifically to determine the quality of data and includes the process of checking data collections and relating to objectives either during, or at the end of a project.
Data quality is significant only when it is transmitted to the intentional use of the data. Investigators must recognize the basic framework where the data set is to be used in order to know if it is worth.

Assessing data quality includes data life cycle quality assurance, implementation, assessment and planning using a well designed quality management system. The assessment process helps to improve and enhance data and compute the impact of the evaluated data quality in terms of customer service, cost etc. It also targets the data quality of the organizations against clear defined standards.

A good data quality assessment will:

  • Evaluate quality objectives
  • Conduct preliminary data review
  • Perform statistical test
  • Data analysis
  • Data verification
